Western Sicily

Harbour towns, old streets and salt pans in the evening light. Several nights in Trapani or Marsala leave time for days both by the sea and ashore.

Seven to ten days from one base can be a whole holiday. About two weeks with both towns leave more time for Erice, Mozia and quiet days aboard.

Two towns as a starting point

A holiday around Trapani and Marsala.

With two to three weeks in total, there is also room for the beach coast to the north or a longer stay towards Sciacca in the south. The Egadi Islands are a separate holiday. Mainland excursions can be made while the boat stays in harbour.

Trapani–Marsala is listed as about 15 nautical miles in a harbour overview, a rough estimate without specific marina endpoints. Weather and sea conditions determine sailing days; if starting and ending in the same place, time is also needed for the return.

Trapani

The old town and the sea around it.

A walk along Corso Vittorio Emanuele can continue out towards Torre di Ligny, with a coffee break in the side streets along the way. An afternoon can be spent walking by the water, shopping and having dinner in town.

Several nights in the same berth leave time for both the old town and time aboard. Access to the old town depends on which marina the boat is in.

A day up in Erice.

Stone streets, views over the coast and a pastry-shop break with genovesi, small filled pastries. Erice suits a day trip of its own.

The cable car starts some distance from the harbour, so the trip also includes transport to the lower station. Operating days and the last return vary by season and day of the week. A day in Trapani is an alternative.

Marsala

Market, wine and an ancient ship.

A morning can begin at the market near Porta Garibaldi and continue through the streets around Via XI Maggio, with shopping for lunch or a café break.

Baglio Anselmi holds the remains of a Punic ship. The museum is a destination for an outing from the boat; a visit to a wine producer can suit another day.

Stagnone and Mozia

Salt landscapes and an island day.

North of Marsala lies the Stagnone lagoon. Salt pans and windmills create a very different landscape from the town streets. Out in the lagoon is Mozia, with paths among archaeological remains and the Whitaker Museum.

The trip starts at one of the departure points on land and continues by passenger boat, while your own boat stays in harbour. Mozia is in the lagoon, not in the Egadi Islands.

Boat transport is paid separately from the island and museum visit, and bad weather can stop the boats. Marsala is an alternative if the trip is cancelled.

With more time in the north

Beaches in San Vito, a short trip to Scopello.

San Vito Lo Capo offers several swimming days from its sandy beach, with the town just behind. Castellammare del Golfo is another possible harbour stay, with houses above the waterfront.

Scopello suits a shore excursion to the village and views over the sea. A walk in Zingaro must follow the reserve’s updated map of open paths. Scopello is also worth a visit without a longer walk.

San Vito’s harbour has some exposure to northeasterly winds. A stay to the north depends on a suitable berth and sea conditions.

Days to the south

Mazara and the temples of Selinunte.

In Mazara del Vallo, an outing can lead through the kasbah streets, with lunch and a visit to Museo del Satiro to see the bronze statue. This is a shore excursion from Marsala; a suitable visitor berth for the boat has not been investigated sufficiently here.

Selinunte can have another day: great rows of columns, ruins and the landscape towards the sea. The visit requires a car or prearranged transport both ways, with plenty of time outdoors among the ruins.

Sciacca with several days.

Ceramics, old streets and sea views make Sciacca interesting for a longer stay. Berthing must be clarified: LNI describes a visitor arrangement for members. A stay here involves a longer trip along the coast, with time allowed for weather and the return.

Places to visit in the south

Selinunte’s listings have overlapping autumn periods with different closing times. The coast farther east to Ragusa has not been researched as a continuous holiday here.

Arrival and boat care

To the boat via Birgi.

Trapani or Marsala.

Trapani–Birgi airport has bus connections to both towns. Transport from town to the specific marina is an additional leg.

June or September may suit. Outside summer, harbour services, transport and visiting calendars matter more.

Birgi: bus connections ↗

Trapani before and after the holiday.

Boat Service Trapani / Cantiere Drepanum offers haul-out, maintenance and storage. This makes Trapani a possibility for both holidays and boat care, with a suitable marina and a separate boatyard agreement. Lifting and keel support for the individual boat must be confirmed with the yard.

Lifting, storage and supervision

The yard advertises travel lifts of 40, 80 and 200 tonnes.

A boatyard berth and a pleasant holiday berth may be on different quays.

Maps.

The maps locate towns and excursion destinations, not specific berths. The coast is simplified from Natural Earth 1:10m. Four islands in Stagnone are drawn from OpenStreetMap. The points in Trapani and Marsala mark the towns.
