Bay of Naples

Colourful houses above the fishing boats on Procida, gardens and warm pools on Ischia. Several nights in one place leave time for dinner ashore and full days in other parts of the islands.

Seven to ten days around Procida and Ischia can fill a whole holiday. With more time, Capri, Naples or part of the Amalfi Coast can be included.

Time on the islands

Three possible holidays

7–10 days

Procida and Ischia, with time for small towns, swimming and shore excursions.

About two weeks

The same islands, with room for Capri and a city day in Naples without moving the boat every day.

2–3 weeks

Include some of the Amalfi Coast too, perhaps by passenger boat, or stay longer on the islands.

These are the total holiday lengths for each option. May–June or September are possible months for a stay.

Islands, city and mainland

Around the Bay of Naples

Procida and Ischia lie to the west, Capri farther south. Stabia is on the mainland, with Pompeii within reach overland. The Amalfi Coast lies on the other side of the peninsula.

Procida

Corricella and the streets above

A walk through the streets can end with lunch beside the fishing boats in Corricella. Farther up towards Terra Murata, views open out across the houses and the sea. Steps and slopes connect the waterfront to the heights.

Ischia

Several days from one harbour

The trip from Ischia Porto to Ischia Ponte can continue across the bridge to Castello Aragonese, with time for the buildings and viewpoints on the rock. The castle is in a different place from the marina.

A garden or pool day

At La Mortella near Forio, paths wind through dense vegetation, fountains and water-lily ponds. The garden opens four days a week in season; a concert requires a separate booking.

Another day can be spent at Citara and Poseidon, with warm pools and a beach for an admission fee. Both are shore excursions from the harbour.

Visiting days and season

La Mortella lists Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 2 April to 1 November in 2026. Poseidon lists a season from 18 April to 31 October in 2026. The castle has steps and paths, a lift for part of the access and an annual winter closure.

With more time

Capri and a day in Naples

On Capri, the trip from Marina Grande climbs to Anacapri by bus or taxi, then continues on foot to Villa San Michele and its garden. A passenger-boat trip is also an alternative to moving the boat here.

Naples offers a different day: old-town streets, pizza and the MANN archaeological museum, with collections from the towns around Vesuvius. Which departments are open varies; the museum’s visiting plan is linked below.

A day on the mainland

The streets of Pompeii

Pompeii deserves a day of its own ashore, with time to walk among the houses and stone-paved streets. The visit can be arranged during a mainland stay. The villas of Stabiae or the museum at Quisisana are alternatives for a more limited selection.

From Marina di Stabia, local transport to the railway station is needed first, or a car for the whole journey. The marina’s seasonal shuttle goes to town, not directly to Pompeii.

Trains and entrances

The train on the Naples–Sorrento line stops at Pompei Villa dei Misteri, beside the Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra entrances. Other trains serve other sides of the site.

Optional within a longer holiday

A trip to Amalfi

Amalfi can offer a day in town and a visit to the paper museum, which shows how paper is made. Positano can also be visited by passenger boat while the boat stays in harbour. Passenger boats from Castellammare do not necessarily leave from Marina di Stabia.

Staying a few extra days on Ischia is an equally valid choice.

Coves and protected areas

Regno di Nettuno around the islands has zoning and permits for visiting boats. The exact cove, mooring and any overnight stay must be considered separately. The buoy field at Lacco Ameno is for authorised use from dawn to dusk.

At Punta Campanella, Mortelle is a conditional day stop in 2026: 08:00–20:00, without reservations, with a qualified person aboard ready to manoeuvre. Swimming in the buoy fields is prohibited. It is therefore unsuitable as a base from which everyone goes ashore on an excursion.

Arrival and preparation

The journey to Procida

From the airport to the boat

From Naples airport, Alibus goes to the port area. Beverello and Porta di Massa are different terminals; the stop depends on the ticket. Caremar sails from there to Procida, followed by onward transport to the agreed pontoon at Marina Grande.

Stabia before or between trips

Lifting and storage

The operator lists travel lifts of 60 and 220 tonnes and a work quay for boats with a stated draught of 4–6 metres.

Stabia can be a separate boatyard stay before or between days on the islands.

Places and practical information

Operators, places to visit and transport are linked beside their descriptions. Season dates are from 2026. The parks’ basic rules must be read together with the year’s additions and operating notices. MANN’s overview changes with exhibitions and work on the collections.
